Clay Shingles

If we take a brief look at the history of clay roof tiles, then we come to know that they have an authentic looking and historical longevity time proven record. Clay roof tiles come from different parts of the world and you can find them in many forms. But it’s not necessary that all tiles will be similar to each other. Many countries produce tiles which are not very absorbent and not resistant to water permeability. Many centuries back, they have proven themselves. So always be extra careful in clay tiles selection. For instance, European clay tiles products are exceptional in quality and have proven performance even in severe weather conditions. The TFC tiles are cheaper to install than any other tiles, lighter in weight than concrete tiles and they are permanent roofing. They are usually available in number of different styles including flat tiles that stimulate slate both thinner looking as well as traditional thicker butt appearance. However, if you matche concrete tiles with it they just have similar looks but with different color blends and style and they are also heavier than clay tiles. In the last century, the use of concrete tiles was only in the beginning of about 30years. These were often produced with slurry paint coating that broke down quickly in freeze-thaw prone areas. But now it is produced through-color mixing and no clay paint and slurry coating is being used which keep them for longer period of time.

Architectural designs have been used for clay tiles and concrete tiles to make it look more attractive and authentic. They last for longer period of time if installed properly and routine maintenance is performed almost every year. If you really want a good roof and want to install better concrete tile system, then put them on plywood sheathed substrate where the work of roofer can easily be judged. The vents and penetration can easily be sealed up with good details such as good underlayment; SBS modified base sheets, synthetic breathable under lay; GAF deck armor, or self adhered membrane; winter guard. All completed with right roofing practices, in order to achieve good roofs.

On the other hand, red barrel tiles are the most venerable type of roof tiles. These are basically Spanish style made of fired clay. Modern tiles in red tiles are cement tiles made with suitable coating. Sometimes, tiles can be distinguished by their shape and the way they overlap. Concrete and clay roof tiles are very elegantly shaped with thick texture and if they are installed correctly with proper maintenance, they last for years. If not, then it’s nothing except a headache. Clay roof tiles cannot be installed over solid plywood and it is not recommended to install 1x2 boards first over the plywood and then cover a synthetic underlayment over those 1x2s. Clay roof tiles can be made in plastic to be more cost effective, long lasting and light weight. It is made with the combination of a thermoplastic, polyolefin polymers and a chlorine containing polymer.
